Classic WoW Dungeons By Level

There are a lot of dungeons in Classic WoW, significantly more than in any expansion of the game, as the content spans a full 60 levels. It can be difficult to remember each dungeon after all of these years, where the instance is located, what level you should be to run the dungeon, and other factors. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of every Classic WoW dungeon broken down by level for you. Not sure if you are high enough level to join that group forming in trade chat? Take a look below and then run the dungeon with confidence!

Thank you to Relik @ https://barrens.chat/ for the beautiful dungeon images!

Ragefire Chasm – Level 13-18

Ragefire Chasm Location: Orgrimmar
Recommended Players: 5
Max Players: 10

Ragefire Chasm, or RFC, is pretty much a Horde only dungeon due to its location inside of Orgrimmar. In RFC players will combat against troggs and the Searing Blade clan as they clear the dungeon. Many players skip this dungeon while leveling, but it can be a nice boost to experience from the quests early on. There are also some decent weapon rewards from the Hidden Enemies quest such as the Axe of Orgrimmar for Warriors.

Wailing Caverns – Level 17-24

Wailing Caverns Location: The Barrens
Recommended Players: 5
Max Players: 10

Wailing Caverns, or WC, is also primarily a Horde dungeon due to the low level range and being placed in The Barrens. This dungeon puts players up against the Druids of the Fang and provides a number of solid rewards for players. The Armor of the Fang set is solid for leather wearers in the early levels, while the Crescent Staff from the Leaders of the Fang quest is a fantastic weapon for many classes early on.

The Deadmines – Level 17-26

The Deadmines Location: Westfall
Recommended Players: 5
Max Players: 10

The Deadmines, or DM (sometimes referred to as VC as well), is primarily an Alliance dungeon due to its location in Westfall. This dungeons pits players against Edwin Van Cleef and his Defias Brotherhood. More or less the equivalent to Wailing Caverns, this is a dungeon that should be run by low level Alliance players at least once for the quests and gear that can be obtained here.

Shadowfang Keep – Level 22-30

Shadowfang Keep Location: Silverpine Forest
Recommended Players: 5
Max Players: 10

Shadowfang Keep, or SFK, is generally the first neutral dungeon in the game. While it is more typically run by Horde, plenty of Alliance players make their way to this dungeon as well in the early levels. Home of Archmage Arugal and his Worgen army, this haunted keep boasts a number of solid drops for low level players as well a decent handful of quests to complete.

Blackfathom Deeps Location: Ashenvale
Recommended Players: 5
Max Players: 10

Blackfathom Deeps, or BFD, is another relatively low level neutral dungeon. This dungeon is arguably the first truly neutral dungeon as it is located in Ashenvale where plenty of Horde and Alliance players will visit while leveling. BFD features a series of watery caverns leading to a temple of the old gods. There are some great drops out of here, including an amazing leveling wand casters won’t want to miss out on.

The Stockade – Level 24-32

The Stockade Location: Stormwind
Recommended Players: 5
Max Players: 10

The Stockades, or Stocks/Stockades, is an Alliance only dungeon for the most part due to its location within Stormwind. There are also a decent amount of quests for Alliance players to complete here in their late 20s.

Gnomeregan – Level 29-38

Gnomeregan Location: Dun Morogh
Recommended Players: 5
Max Players: 10

Gnomeregan, or Gnomer, may seem like it is mainly an Alliance dungeon due to its location in Dun Morogh, but Horde have a nice teleporter in Booty Bay to get there as well. This dungeon is a long, somewhat confusing, city area that once was home of the Gnomes. Gnomeregan provides some excellent quest reward gear that can last players until the 40s while leveling and is well worth doing at least once.

Razorfen Kraul – Level 29-38

Razorfen Kraul Location: The Barrens
Recommended Players: 5
Max Players: 10

Razorfen Kraul, or RFK, is located in the southern Barrens near Thousand Needles, making it a more neutral dungeon than it may seem. Home of many great drops, this quilboar infested dungeon offers some nice power spikes while leveling in the 30s. Razorfen Downs – Level 37-46

Max Players: 10

Razorfen Downs, or RFD, is a mid level dungeon located directly across from RFK. Also packed full of quilboars, this dungeon is very similar to RFK in many ways. Zul’Farrak Location: Tanaris

One of the lesser run dungeons of Classic WoW, Sunken Temple does offer some very valuable drops as players break into the higher levels. If nothing else, this is one of the most beautiful and enjoyable dungeons to run, so long as you don’t get lost.

Blackrock Depths – Level 52-60

Blackrock Depths Location: Blackrock Mountain
Recommended Players: 5
Max Players: 5

Blackrock Depths, or BRD, is a sprawling city located within Blackrock Mountain. Home to the Dark Iron Dwarves, this city is as massive as it is useful. With more bosses and chambers than you can count, more quests than your quest log can hold, and some incredible gear, BRD is a dungeon you will likely run again and again as you reach or approach level 60. There is pre-raid BIS gear, attunement quests, Dark Iron Ore smelting, and many more benefits to BRD. While it is a very long and somewhat confusing dungeon at first, make sure you explore this one fully as you reach max level, you won’t regret it.

Lower Blackrock Spire Location: Blackrock Mountain
Recommended Players: 5
Max Players: 10

Lower Blackrock Spire, or LBRS, is also located in Blackrock Mountain. While all of Blackrock Spire is technically one instance, LBRS and UBRS are typically treated as two separate instances by players. Stratholme Undead – Level 58-60

Stratholme Undead Location: Eastern Plaguelands
Recommended Players: 5
Max Players: 5

Stratholme Undead, or UD Strat, features a number of…you guessed it, undead monsters. This once thriving human city was culled by Prince Arthas during Warcraft 3 as the citizens began to turn into the undead. Home to Baron Rivendare and his notoriously elusive mount drop, this is a long standing fan favorite and one of the more difficult dungeons in Classic WoW. UD Strat is also home to some fantastic drops that will be very valuable as you gear up for raids at level 60.

Stratholme Living – Level 58-60

Stratholme Living Location: Eastern Plaguelands
Recommended Players: 5
Max Players: 5

Stratholme Living, or Live Strat, features the still living half of this city. This dungeon is a look at what remains of the once great human city, and features a number of great gear drops for fresh level 60s as well. Not to mention those juicy Righteous Orbs for your Crusader enchants. Typically run a little less often than UD Strat, Live Strat will see plenty of level 60 runs as well.

Scholomance – Level 58-60

Scholomance Location: Western Plaguelands
Recommended Players: 5
Max Players: 5

Scholomance, or Scholo, is another level 60 dungeon to help players gear up and get ready for raids. Serving as an academy of prospective Scourge necromancers, this dungeon offers a number of benefits to level 60 players. Obviously, there is the pre-raid gear which will be valuable in its own right. However, Scholo also features one of the two areas in Classic WoW where flasks can be crafted (the other being in Blackwing Lair). Scholo also is home to mobs that drop valuable Dark Runes, highly valued by raiders.

Dire Maul West, or DM:W, is the Capital Gardens area of Dire Maul. The middle difficulty of the three wings of this dungeon, DM:W is haunted by the ghosts and skeletons of the Highborne. This area also houses a variety of arcane creatures and monstrosities. Dire Maul as a whole offers some extremely valuable loot, and DM:W is no different. This will be a must run for many players when Dire Maul releases.

Dire Maul North – Level 58-60

Dire Maul North Location: Feralas
Recommended Players: 5
Max Players: 5

Dire Maul North, also known as DM:N or DM:Trib, is home to the tribute runs that are so often talked about in Classic WoW. DM:N is classified as the Gordok Commons, and is the hardest of the three Dire Maul wings. The original catch up gear mechanic, DM:N drops gear that is at par or above the level of early raid gear and is a must run for level 60s when it releases.

Are Classic WoW Dungeons Worth Doing While Leveling?

Dungeons are generally worth doing in Classic WoW while leveling once you have all the quests for the dungeon. Dungeon runs take a lot longer to form, and longer to complete, than they do in modern versions of World of Warcraft. With no dungeon finder tool, and actually having to run to each dungeon, they are much less efficient from a leveling standpoint (although quite a bit more engaging and fun in our opinion). That being said, it is almost never worth it to spam dungeon runs in order to level up in Classic WoW. It can also be highly beneficial to get some premier gear drops out of certain dungeons (weapons especially) to speed up your leveling process.

Is Leveling In Dungeons Viable In Classic WoW?

Leveling in dungeons is viable, although not ideal. With a dedicated and efficient group, you can spam dungeons in order to level up at a decent rate. While it will be slower than questing or grinding typically, it can be faster in certain situations. This is something that should be considered only with a dedicated group at launch to get ahead of the masses as they compete over quests and mobs to grind. Scarlet Monastery is an example of where it can be worth it efficiency and experience wise in your mid 30s, or if quests are overly swamped in the beginning stages of launch it may be worthwhile. However, this should not be a go to strategy overall.
